Insight From Pain

Y'know, I like to think I'm technically savvy. I'm not a trained coder or anything like that. But I like to build blogs, memberships sites etc. So anyway, I realised the other day that I had completely neglected the powers of 4G. We we're moving into the new home, which as you may well you know, is a total pain in the arse. Of course, our router / internet wouldn't work without an obscure new cable, so we resorted to using our phone networks.

Now, I had been burned by my miserable experience of using a dongle in the Scottish Highlands a few years ago. As such I had written it off as a viable connectivity option ever since. And that was a silly stance. The system worked, I could work from home quite happily, and our obscure internet cable arrived a few days later with little fanfare.

Now this got me thinking (as almost everything seems to). In our paperless age, and with most knowledge roles based from a screen, it is so god damn easy to work from anywhere. And if it is so god damn easy, then why do we continue to inhabit these stuffy depressing offices? What possible reason is there to inhabit these spaces for 8 hours of your day?

Thankfully, the technical reasons for staying in the office have pretty much disappeared. And yet, I suspect the cultural barrier will persist a little longer. Yes, the pandemic has turbo charged WFH as a genuine option for many folks. But it has also exposed the redundancy of many back office and middle management functions. And those folks will fight tooth and nail to retain their relevancy. Let the battle commence.

All that from a damn 4G connection. Who knows what wonders 5G has in store for me!
